Lech Jankowski's "grüner tisch" is a recent painting, made in 2022, that captures a landscape through a very personal lens. The color palette is muted, almost earthy, which gives the painting a grounded, almost dreamlike quality. It's as if Jankowski isn't just depicting a scene, but also a feeling. Looking closely, you see a lot of texture; the paint is applied in such a way that you can almost feel the roughness of the landscape. The black lines that make up the trees or mountain range are bold and confident, contrasting with the subtle gradations in the sky and land. Then there's the green table of the title, a horizontal swathe that contains just three small markings, perhaps birds. The physicality of the medium is really present here. It makes me think of some of Guston’s later work. But "grüner tisch" is very much its own thing, isn't it? A little puzzle, a little poem, and a lot of paint.
