This untitled artwork by Mihai Olos features a cross-like structure of transparent, geometric forms. The cube, repeated and stacked, is one of humanity's oldest symbols, representing stability, the earth, and orientation in space. Think of the Kaaba in Mecca, a cube toward which Muslims orient themselves in prayer, symbolizing the center of the world. Here, in Olos’ work, the transparent material robs the cube of its traditional solidity, yet it still resonates with a sense of order. This subversion speaks to the changing cultural values of the 20th and 21st centuries. We still long for stability and orientation, but recognize that these can be transient, shifting, and transparent, like a half-remembered dream. The act of repeating the cube can be seen across time, from ancient ziggurats to modern skyscrapers. The cube is not simply a geometric form, it is a vessel of profound cultural memory, a symbol of our enduring quest to understand and shape the world around us, its recurrence across millennia attests to its deep resonance within the human psyche.
