Hans Haacke's "Condensation Cube" is not paint on canvas, but it does something that painting does: it makes you look. The process feels simple enough: a clear, sealed box with water inside. But the magic is, it generates its own weather. The condensation is like an abstract painting, one that never repeats itself. This feels like a science experiment, but there's something deeply poetic about watching a miniature weather system form and dissipate. I wonder what Haacke was thinking about when he sealed that box. Was he thinking about climate change? About the earth as a closed system? Maybe he was just curious about what would happen. Like a painter starting a canvas without a plan, he created the conditions for something to emerge. It reminds me of Beuys, but more like Cage. It's a simple gesture, but in its own way, it's a collaboration with nature. It feels incredibly generative and in line with what other artists have been trying to do for decades.
