Vrede van Rastatt 1714

Georg Wilhelm Vestner created this medal, Vrede van Rastatt, sometime before 1740. Look at the cool, metallic sheen, and the way the light plays across the raised surfaces. The incised lines articulate the imagery within the circular format. The medal is divided into two distinct scenes, each contained on one side, creating a duality. One side features an elaborate helmet, perhaps symbolizing military strength, resting above doves of peace and sprigs of foliage. On the other, there is the Villa of Rastatt, geometrically constructed. This medal operates on a semiotic level, using symbols to communicate complex political ideas of peace and power through visual representation. The rigid formality in the composition of the villa contrasts with the more organic arrangement of the helmet and doves. This contrast challenges any singular interpretation, suggesting that peace and power must coexist.
