About this artwork

This silver family medal was crafted in 1729 by Willem de Wijs. It showcases allegorical figures laden with symbolism. To the left, Constancy stands with her symbolic attribute, the lamp, an ancient emblem of unwavering devotion, reminiscent of classical depictions of Vesta. To the right stands Honor. Here, the motif of the 'marriage handshake' between the two figures binds them together, echoing motifs from Roman marriage art where the handshake, or 'dextrarum iunctio,' sealed vows. Such gestures transcend epochs. We see it in ancient reliefs and Renaissance paintings, each time imbued with the hope for enduring union. Observe how these symbols resurface, carrying the weight of history, adapted, yet eternally linked to our primal desires for constancy and honor.
