Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this drawing, “Ontwerpen, onder andere voor een kast,” with a pencil. At first glance, one is struck by the stark linearity and geometric forms that dominate the composition. The structural integrity of the cabinet is laid bare, its skeletal framework revealing the underlying principles of design. Cachet reduces the object to its essential components, lines delineating edges, planes defining surfaces. Each stroke contributes to a semiotic system where form follows function. This focus on structure transcends mere representation; it becomes an exercise in visual syntax. The cabinet ceases to be simply a piece of furniture and instead turns into a study of spatial relations and architectural possibility. The interplay of vertical and horizontal lines creates a sense of stability, but it also hints at the modularity and adaptability inherent in the design. In its deliberate simplicity, Cachet invites us to contemplate the essence of form and the potential for innovation within the most mundane of objects.
