Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created these designs for cabinets in pencil. We immediately notice the linear quality of the work; each shape is defined by tentative strokes, giving a sense of form in progress. These sketches show an interest in the basic structure of furniture. Cachet reduces the cabinets to their essential geometric forms – mostly rectangular shapes. This simplification allows us to see the underlying framework. The transparency of the lines adds another layer, revealing how the pieces might fit together in three dimensions. Cachet's approach reminds us that design begins with understanding spatial relationships. Here the emphasis is less on decoration and more on construction itself. By focusing on the bare bones, Cachet invites us to consider how we construct meaning from simple shapes. The designs show the power of suggestion and the potential held within preliminary sketches.
