Arne Quinze created the large-scale installation "Rock Strangers" in Ostend. These monumental forms dominate the visual field with their striking orange colour against the pale horizon, evoking feelings of curiosity and perhaps bewilderment. Quinze plays with our perceptions of space and form. The shapes are reminiscent of naturally eroded rocks, yet their artificial colour and smooth surfaces contradict this association, creating a deliberate tension. This clash can be seen through the lens of structuralism, where the artwork disrupts conventional binary oppositions, such as nature versus artifice. These "Rock Strangers" unsettle our sense of place, causing us to reassess our relationship with the environment. By using such bold colour, Quinze challenges the fixed meanings associated with sculpture, suggesting new ways of thinking about urban space. This work remains a compelling site for ongoing interpretation.
