Bessie Forman made this drawing of a Card Table, we don't know exactly when, but it's a reminder that even depictions of everyday objects can hold unexpected beauty. I love the warm sepia tones and the precision of the lines, it is as if she is inviting us to appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry of this unassuming piece of furniture. The details in the drawing, the way the light plays on the carved legs and the smooth surface of the table top, it really makes you want to run your fingers all over it. I am drawn to the foot of the table, it reminds me of the foot of an animal, and I think it is interesting that Forman has chosen to highlight these aspects. The drawing rewards close looking, I think it speaks to the transformative power of art. The drawing reminds me a little of Agnes Martin's work; both artists find beauty in simplicity and repetition. I am not sure if it would be something I would have at home, but I appreciate the work that went into it. It shows us that art can be found in the most unexpected places.
