This is page 40 from Johann Sibmacher's Schön Neues Modelbuch, made around the turn of the 17th century. It's a book of model patterns, printed with ink on paper. The designs you see here aren't freehand drawings, but precisely rendered patterns, probably created with carved woodblocks. Consider the labor involved: from the making of ink and paper, to the skills required to cut the woodblocks. These patterns would have been used as guides for the production of lace and needlework, highly prized textiles at the time. The repeating motifs and geometric frameworks reflect the modular nature of textile production; these patterns could be adapted to different scales and materials, and applied by skilled artisans to create unique and beautiful objects. Sibmacher’s book, therefore, is not just a collection of designs, but an index of craft knowledge and aspiration. Ultimately, understanding this page requires us to look beyond traditional boundaries of fine art, and to recognize the value and artistry inherent in craft and design.
