Jakob Weidemann created "Steinskulpturen" using oil on canvas, constructing a world of abstract forms and muted tones. Born in Norway in 1923, Weidemann came of age during a period of immense social and political upheaval. His experiences in the Second World War and its aftermath deeply influenced his artistic vision. The war led to a lot of artists abstracting their vision, in an attempt to universalise the artworks beyond the reach of oppressive regimes and political movements. Although abstract, the painting evokes a sense of constructed space. The geometric shapes intersect and overlap, suggesting buildings, monuments, or urban landscapes. The subdued palette reinforces a somber mood, mirroring the post-war atmosphere of uncertainty and reconstruction. Weidemann’s personal quest for meaning and his engagement with existentialism are palpable in this introspective and evocative work. "Steinskulpturen" becomes a visual metaphor for the fractured nature of identity and experience in a world shaped by conflict and change.
