This sword knife hilt, crafted by Goto Mitsuyasu, features intricate symbolic motifs. Here, we observe the depiction of a figure adorned with gourds, associated with Daikoku, the god of wealth. Alongside, there is a pair of rats, Daikoku's messengers and symbols of prosperity. The appearance of Daikoku transcends borders. You may see him in varied depictions across Asian cultures, each adaptation weaving a unique narrative while retaining core attributes. This echoes the ancient Greek god Hermes, who bore similar responsibilities as a psychopomp, protector, and guide. The repetition and transformation of symbols like these, across eras and cultures, serve as a poignant reminder of our shared psychological and emotional landscape.
