This etching, "Chinese en Javaanse kooplieden" ("Chinese and Javanese merchants") by Dutch artist Pieter Schenk (1660-1711), depicts three figures, two men and a woman, in traditional dress. Created between 1682 and 1711, the artwork highlights the influence of Dutch trade and colonial exploration in Southeast Asia during the 17th century. The detailed depiction of clothing and accessories, particularly the Javanese man’s headwear and the Chinese woman’s intricate robe, provides a glimpse into the cultural exchange and interaction of the period. This small-scale etching, measuring 104 mm in height and 67 mm in width, is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
