Alexej von Jawlensky created this painting, "Landschaftstudie - Dorfstrasse," exploring a village street with what looks like oil on board, and I’m really taken with the vibrant, almost Fauvist color choices. You get the sense that the painting wasn’t about rendering the scene realistically, but capturing the essence of it – the light, the feeling, the sheer joy of color. The painting has this incredible, almost tactile quality. The surface isn’t smooth; you can see the brushstrokes, the way the paint was applied in thick, deliberate marks. There's this juicy passage where the road meets the buildings; the pinks and yellows of the street bump up against the greens and yellows of the buildings. The sky is swirly, moody, and full of movement, which really adds to the emotional charge of the piece. Jawlensky's work reminds me a bit of early Kandinsky; both artists were interested in pushing beyond representation to explore the emotional and spiritual power of color and form. This painting is all about the process, the sheer pleasure of putting paint on a surface and making something that vibrates with life.
