Ellsworth Kelly made this study for Rebound, in what looks like ink or maybe thin black paint, probably on paper. It's all about the push and pull of shapes, right? These two big, dark forms kind of nudge each other, leaving this sliver of white space between them. The black isn't just flat; you can see the texture, the way the ink or paint settled into the paper. There's a real physicality to it. I love the way the black areas have these subtle variations, like they're breathing. I wonder if he used a brush, or maybe even just poured the ink on? It's like he's letting the material do its thing, embracing the accidents. This reminds me a little of some of Franz Kline's work, but more distilled, more about pure form. It's cool how something so simple can be so engaging, so full of potential energy. Like, what would happen if those shapes actually touched? Art is always asking us to imagine, to fill in the blanks.
