This photograph shows the front cover of an album about the construction of the Goenoengsari sugar factory in Java, made sometime between May 1926 and August 1927 by an unknown photographer. The book's design is striking in its simplicity: the eye is immediately drawn to the central label, an octagon of receding lines containing the name “Goenoengsari” in bold sans serif. The use of geometric shapes and clean lines suggests the influence of the Bauhaus movement, a school of art and design known for its functionalist approach and minimalist aesthetic. This geometric structure reflects the industrial nature of its contents, promising an internal order of images documenting the factory's construction. The album itself becomes a metaphor for the industrialized process it contains. The book challenges us to consider how even mundane objects carry cultural and historical weight.
