Editor: Here we have Markus Raetz's "Lisi," a drawing of unknown date in the Tate collection. The chalk strokes give the figure a sense of ephemeral movement. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Considering the title, the representation of a woman here invites a critical lens. How does the artist's gaze, a male gaze perhaps, shape our understanding of female identity? Editor: That's a great point. It's a quick sketch, but the pose is very deliberately drawn. Curator: Indeed. The incompleteness, the sketch-like quality, might be a commentary on the impossibility of truly capturing a person's essence, especially when filtered through societal expectations and power dynamics. Food for thought, wouldn't you agree? Editor: Absolutely! It really pushes us to question the image and the context it was created in.
