This is Paula Modersohn-Becker's "Seated Female Nude," a drawing of unknown date, using graphite. I love how the lines are both tentative and confident, like she's feeling her way around the form. There's a real sense of immediacy here; you can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the page. The texture is built up through layers of hatching, creating a sense of depth and volume. Look at the way she's rendered the shadows under the figure's breasts and along her thighs, it's all about the gradations of light and dark. Her gaze looks off to the left, lost in thought, almost like she’s looking at her future. Modersohn-Becker reminds me a bit of Kathe Kollwitz, another German artist who was grappling with similar themes of womanhood and the body. Both artists were part of an exciting exchange of ideas, each pushing the boundaries of what art could be.
