This painting was made by René Magritte and it shows a door, maybe made of wood, with a landscape visible through an irregular opening. It’s hard to know if he layered the paint wet-on-wet, or if he waited for each layer to dry; either way, you can’t see a lot of texture. It's smooth. The edges of that opening are so strange. Are they crisp or ragged? Maybe both? I see a tree and a building in the background, but what I can't figure out is how they relate to the door itself. That tree looks like a leaf, which is also part of the tree. In the same way, the door is part of the room. That landscape that appears through the hole in the door is a flat, illustrative style. There’s a similar tension in the work of Philip Guston, who was also interested in flatness and cartoonish forms. I feel like they’re both saying something about how we perceive reality and make sense of the world around us.
