Alb. Kapteijn made this photograph of a farm and some livestock by a river in the Netherlands. I find myself getting lost in the muted tones here, a symphony of browns and grays that feel both aged and timeless. There's a softness to the surface that invites you in, like a memory half-forgotten. I'm really drawn to the way the trees are mirrored in the water; the reflections aren't perfect, there's a slight wobble, a kind of visual echo that brings a depth and movement to the piece. See how the light catches on the water’s surface, creating a constellation of tiny shimmering highlights. It is as though Kapteijn wasn't interested in capturing a scene but a feeling, a sense of quiet contemplation. Kapteijn's work reminds me of Corot, in the way he’s able to find the sublime in the everyday. Like much great art, this piece isn't about answers, but about opening up a space for questions.
