About this artwork

This is Moderno’s small bronze relief, "Adoration of the Magi" made in Italy around 1500. During the Renaissance, biblical scenes were often reimagined through the lens of contemporary society, reflecting its values, as well as its anxieties. "Adoration of the Magi" depicts the three wise men presenting gifts to the infant Jesus. The composition, however, elevates their status, representing a hierarchy of power and reverence. In Renaissance Italy, class divisions were rigid, and artistic representations often reinforced social hierarchies. The kneeling king signifies humility before the divine, yet his opulent robes simultaneously reflect earthly status and power. The virgin Mary occupies a place of honor, but her representation also underscores the limited roles prescribed to women during the time period. Consider how Moderno’s bronze relief, while seemingly traditional, subtly reinforces the social constructs of its time, prompting us to reflect on the complex interplay between art, religion, and societal norms.
