Niels Larsen Stevns made this sketch of a crucifixion scene with other sketches of cows using graphite on paper. I imagine Stevns rapidly moving his hand across the page, letting the graphite softly capture these figures. I'm drawn to the cow studies, maybe because they are a respite from the intensity of the crucifixion scene. The scene looks challenging, a figure pinned to a cross; you know, it's not easy to draw. The lines of the cows feel soft and rounded. He has this great sensibility for the body. With only a few strokes he understood form. It makes me wonder if Stevns was working on these different sketches simultaneously, or if one followed the other, creating a rhythm that we are now witnessing. It’s like a painter’s visual diary, where ideas overlap and inform one another.
