Niels Larsen Stevns made these loose sketches of vultures and horses with pencil on paper. Look at the confidence of the marks describing those birds! You can feel the artist quickly capturing their essence: two vultures perched, alert, and a series of horse studies fading softly into the page. I can imagine Stevns in his studio, or perhaps outdoors, rapidly filling the page with observations. What was he thinking as he made the marks? Was he trying to understand their form, their weight? The birds are drawn with a darker, heavier line, while the horses almost disappear. It makes me think about intention. What does it mean when you choose to emphasize one thing over another? How does that affect what we see, and how we see it? It’s like Stevns is speaking to us across time, whispering about the endless possibilities of drawing. Drawing, like painting, is a conversation, a way of thinking through making. It embraces not knowing, inviting multiple readings.
