This landscape of West Java was drawn by Adrianus Johannes Bik sometime in the 19th century. The artist used graphite on paper, which gives it a monochromatic palette of grays and blacks. Graphite, a form of carbon, is a relatively soft material, which allowed Bik to create a range of values and textures in the drawing. The varying pressure he applied allowed him to build up the image gradually, creating depth and atmosphere. The strokes create a sense of movement and energy, which bring the landscape to life. Look closely, and you can see the marks left by the artist's hand, giving the drawing an intimate quality. The paper support, made from plant fibers, is relatively thin. The combination of graphite on paper is humble, but allows for subtle and nuanced expression. This work reminds us that art doesn't require precious materials, but rather a careful eye and a skilled hand.
