Abstract 

This is Abstract by Basuki Abdullah. The eye is immediately drawn to the large, amorphous blue shape dominating the canvas. Abdullah’s brushstrokes vary from delicate drips to broad, sweeping gestures, creating a dynamic interplay between control and chance. The composition divides the canvas into distinct zones. A pale upper area contrasts sharply with the vibrant pink lower section. The artist creates a sense of depth through the blurred lines of the reflection, yet this illusion is constantly undermined by the painting's flat materiality. Abdullah destabilizes our sense of perspective, challenging traditional notions of space. Abdullah uses color not just descriptively but structurally, setting up a dialogue between contrasting hues to explore tensions between representation and abstraction. Each element functions as a sign, inviting us to question fixed meanings, and embrace the endless possibilities of interpretation.
