Editor: So, this is Michel Majerus' "MoM Block Nr. 6," painted in 1999, with mixed media and acrylic. I find the clashing colours and bold lines really striking – there’s almost a sense of controlled chaos about it. How do you interpret this work? Curator: Controlled chaos is an excellent description. I see a dialogue between order and disruption, very reflective of its time. Majerus incorporates recognizable geometric shapes, and even what looks like digital hashtags in this field of abstraction. To me, this recalls how we began navigating the overwhelming flow of information in the early internet age. Does it feel like it's referencing recognizable symbols from our shared experience? Editor: Yes, definitely the hashtag jumped out, but so did the overlapping circles, almost like early computer graphics? Is there some kind of commentary on how digital culture shapes our perceptions of space and meaning? Curator: Precisely. These motifs act like a bridge, connecting the canvas to our collective memory of early digital interfaces and information overload. How does this interplay between recognisable symbols and chaotic abstraction resonate with you personally? Does it bring to mind any particular feelings or experiences? Editor: It makes me think of how quickly information, memes, and trends flood the internet, becoming almost abstract through over-saturation. The bold colours amplify that sense of immediacy and ephemerality, I guess. Curator: A perfect summary. Majerus really captured the feeling of that era, and it continues to resonate today as these symbols continue to morph and evolve within our culture. Editor: That's a fresh way to see the painting; I learned something new, thank you. Curator: And so did I; your personal reading opened new possibilities of seeing it too!
