Angelo de Sousa made this pastel on paper, conjuring the freedom of pure gesture. See how the colors swirl, reds and blues and yellows, all looping together across the page? I imagine de Sousa, lost in the simple act of drawing, almost like doodling, but with this intense focus and grace. What was he thinking about as he made these looping marks? Were they a meditation, or maybe just a playful experiment with color and form? Each loop seems to dance with its own energy, its own rhythm. The pastel is so direct. You can feel the mark-making, like you're right there with him, watching the drawing come into being. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, or maybe even some of Matisse's line drawings. Artists are always in conversation, right? Sharing ideas, pushing each other to see the world in new ways. It shows how art can be about letting go, embracing the unexpected, and finding beauty in the simplest of gestures.
