Gary Kuehn made this untitled drawing using what looks like a pencil on paper. Look at the looping lines and the way they almost escape the rectangular border! I imagine Kuehn standing over this piece, arm moving in wide arcs, letting the pencil just kiss the surface of the paper. Did he get into a flow state as he layered those circles, one on top of the other? I’ve done that myself in my own practice. There's a real physical presence to the drawing - you can almost feel the artist's hand moving. Kuehn was known for his sculptures and drawings that explore form and space. He reminds me a little bit of Eva Hesse and other artists who were playing with simple forms in the '60s and '70s. Artists are always building on each other's ideas and experiments, like in a visual conversation. What do you see in this piece that speaks to you? What does it inspire you to create?
