This is the second, revised and expanded, edition of Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species”, published in Germany. It contains an albumen print of the author. Printed in 19th-century Germany, this book challenged the very foundations of the European social order. Darwin's theory of evolution questioned humanity's unique position in the cosmos, shaking religious beliefs and prompting fierce debates. The book was quickly translated into German, reflecting both the intellectual ferment of the time, and the institutional structures that allowed radical ideas to be disseminated. The portrait of Darwin adds another layer to the story, positioning him as a figure of scientific authority, yet also, in the eyes of some, a dangerous revolutionary. The book's publication history, its translations, reviews, and public reception, offer valuable insights into the cultural and intellectual history of the 19th century. These sources help us understand not only the development of scientific thought, but also the social and political impact of ideas.
