This woodblock print was created by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who died in 1892. It depicts Ashikaga Takauji and Nitta Yoshisada. Observe Nitta Yoshisada’s Seppuku; his armour, and his drawn short sword. The act of ritual suicide is one that resurfaces in the history of mankind. It is a culturally defined practice which, regardless of its geographical location, is about honour and redemption. We see it in the ancient Roman Empire with the Stoics, and in Japan as Bushido; the symbolism is about taking control of one's destiny and maintaining dignity in the face of defeat. The red colour of the armour evokes deep emotions of shame and fear and this collective memory of the Samurai practice speaks to our understanding of historical and cultural values.
