This etching by Dutch artist Hercules Segers, "Mountain Valley with a Winding River" (c. 1622-1625), is a prime example of his distinctive style. Segers's landscapes are characterized by rugged, almost chaotic, mountainous terrains, with stark contrasts between light and dark, as seen in this piece. The detailed lines and dramatic composition create a sense of depth and a unique visual experience for the viewer. The print is currently part of the Rijksmuseum's collection.
Comments
For this print Segers once again used the lift-ground technique, in which the representation is drawn directly on the etching plate with a solution of sugar and ink. As a result the etching resembles a pen drawing. Its first owner noted on the back that he had looked at the sheet together with Segers.
