This etching, “Epitaaf van geestelijke,” by Jean Lenfant (1615–1674), is a detailed and ornate design for a tombstone. The central oval frame, which is meant to hold a portrait, is surrounded by a complex arrangement of cherubs, decorative elements, and a cartouche (a decorative plaque), ready to be inscribed with text. The use of classical motifs, such as the urn and the swags of drapery, reflect the popularity of Baroque style in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. This design, characteristic of Lenfant's work, was intended for use as a model for actual monuments.
