He represents the sleep of ignorance, unaware of the miracle unfolding. This links to older visualisations of death. Editor: So, it’s not just a historical event being shown here? Curator: Precisely. Guercino employs symbols that resonate far beyond the literal narrative. What do chains signify? Beyond physical confinement, what else could they represent?
