Carel Christiaan Antony Last created this portrait of Adam Simons using lithography. Simons was a man of influence, as a professor, lawyer and judge. Consider the historical context of the 19th century. During this time, social and political identities were often closely tied to profession and status. Last's portrait seems to participate in constructing and solidifying Simons’ public image. Notice the deliberate choices in his attire and posture that signal his position in society, yet there’s a softness in his gaze. Lithography allowed for wider distribution, and this accessibility contributed to shaping public perceptions of figures like Simons. While appearing conventional, Last’s work also subtly humanizes Simons.
