Cornelis Bos created this print titled 'Lot ontvangt de twee engelen' sometime between 1510 and 1556 using etching and engraving. Bos, a Dutch engraver and printmaker, worked during a period of religious upheaval and transformation, amidst the rise of Protestantism and the ensuing religious conflicts. This piece depicts a scene from the Bible. Lot greets two angels at the entrance to his home; he welcomes them into a city on the brink of destruction. The bodies are idealized, reflecting the Renaissance interest in classical forms. Yet, this story also reflects the anxieties around moral corruption and divine retribution prevalent during the Reformation. Bos's work invites us to consider the intersections of faith, morality, and societal judgment. It encourages us to reflect on our own values and responsibilities in the face of injustice and suffering. The dramatic tension and emotional intensity in this print resonate with the tumultuous times in which it was created.
