Eugene Brodsky’s series of three paintings titled ‘Explosion’ is made up of marks that dart and dash across the surface. He's using gouache and graphite on paper, a playful medium that invites experimentation. I can imagine Brodsky in the studio, turning these sheets of paper this way and that. Each sheet seems to capture a fleeting thought, a momentary burst of energy. Look at the middle panel, the way the lines intersect and overlap – it's as if Brodsky is wrestling with an idea, trying to pin it down on the page. It reminds me of Guston's late work, these strange, cartoonish forms emerging from a haze of color. It makes you wonder what these shapes are, where they came from, and where they are going. Each panel offers a different perspective, a different possibility. Like all paintings, Brodsky's work invites us to join the conversation, to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the table.
