Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing of a decorated initial A with graphite. You know, when I look at this, I imagine Cachet playing with an idea, kind of like doodling in the margins of a notebook. I wonder, was he thinking about illumination, like medieval manuscripts? The way the lines curl and loop, it’s like he’s trying to trap the letter in a garden of swirling vines. It makes me think about the conversations artists have across time, how they borrow and twist and reinvent old ideas. There’s a lightness to the touch, a searching quality. You can almost feel the graphite moving across the page, the artist thinking through his hand. It's a reminder that art isn’t always about finished masterpieces; sometimes it’s about the joy of exploration, the pleasure of the line, the simple act of seeing where an idea might lead.
