Editor: This is Albrecht Altdorfer’s “Landscape with Two Firs,” created in 1522 using ink. The level of detail in this small drawing is remarkable, and the overall impression is one of serene observation of nature. How do you interpret this work? Curator: For me, this drawing opens a window onto the social and political anxieties of the Renaissance. Altdorfer created this work during a period of great upheaval, including the Reformation and the Peasants' War. So, I don’t necessarily see this work as a simple depiction of nature, but instead as an assertion of place and identity within a world in turmoil. Look closely at how the imposing forest dwarfs the distant town. Editor: I see what you mean! The positioning of the natural world versus civilization—so that it diminishes the achievements of man… were artists aware of the environmental impacts of, say, urbanization at this time? Curator: That's a fascinating question. I think it would be anachronistic to suggest they possessed a modern understanding of environmentalism. But the relationship between humans and nature was a central theme in Renaissance thought, and many artists were clearly attuned to the vulnerability of the natural world in the face of human ambition and expansion. Can you feel a deliberate framing, drawing a distinction between the chaos of the foreground and the ordered background? Editor: Yes, I see it now. It's as though he’s contrasting raw, untamed nature with burgeoning civilization. Thanks for bringing that out! Curator: My pleasure! Thinking about Altdorfer’s landscape in this context, we might ask ourselves what spaces we now deem "natural" and whose perspectives are centered when we speak of the environment. Food for thought.
