Dankvart Dreyer painted “Foreground Study with Dock Leaves” using oil on canvas during the Danish Golden Age, a time of national romanticism. Dreyer’s approach, in this work, does not perpetuate the tropes and traditions of landscape painting. Instead, the focus is on the undergrowth, bringing into focus the often-ignored, the overlooked, and the common. The painting's intense study of the foreground invites us to consider our relationship with the natural world, and perhaps to reflect on our place within it. Dreyer’s intense scrutiny of the land, presents nature not as a sublime vista, but as an intimate, almost tactile experience. This move towards the particular can also be seen as a move towards a more democratic representation of nature, one that finds beauty not in the grand sweep of the landscape, but in the humble details of daily life.
