This stereo card, “View of Nuremberg from the Nuremberg Castle”, was made by Johann Friedrich Stiehm in the 19th century. Stereo cards were a popular form of entertainment, using photography to create a 3D effect when viewed through a stereoscope. To make this image, Stiehm would have used a specialized camera with two lenses set apart at the same distance as human eyes, capturing two slightly different perspectives of the same scene. The process of creating stereo cards involved precise chemical processes to develop the photographic plates. The cards would then be mass-produced using printing techniques, which made them affordable. These cards provided a window into different parts of the world, allowing people to experience places they might never visit in person. The very act of viewing the city as a commodity, a product for consumption, speaks to the increasing commodification of culture in the 19th century.
