This is an old photograph entitled "Wedding Portrait of a Student of the Colonial School for Girls and Women in The Hague," and it captures a momentous occasion through a vintage lens. The sepia tones lend a sense of nostalgia, don’t they? I wonder what was going through her mind, standing there with her new husband? Was she excited to start a new life, or scared to leave everything she knew behind? The picture almost feels like a painting to me, with light and shadow and an intimate stillness. Look at the way the light catches the veil, and how the dark suit contrasts with her white dress. The artist must have been a romantic, searching to capture the tenderness of the newlyweds. It’s amazing how artists find ways to see the world anew, each adding their unique brushstroke to the big conversation of art. Just like us painters and writers.
