This porcelain vase was painted with chrysanthemums by N.V. Haagsche Plateelfabriek Rozenburg. Imagine the artist turning the vase slowly, their hand a pivot point to the design, letting the purple blooms emerge from leafy greens. I wonder what it was like to make something so permanent, knowing the kiln would decide the final colours. The vase is divided into panels, forming a structure for the meandering chrysanthemums. I bet the artist worked on this vase in multiple sessions, returning to it to make marks and mix colours just so. The way the purple has been used here reminds me of the work of Odilon Redon, with its dreamlike, ethereal quality. Each brushstroke is a gentle whisper, contributing to the overall harmony and balance of the composition. It’s comforting to imagine these artists conversing across time, each contributing their unique voice to the ever-evolving story of art. Painting is, after all, an ongoing conversation that embraces experimentation and invites endless possibilities.
