Andy Goldsworthy created this drawing, Roof I - Overview B, using pencil on paper. The marks feel provisional, quick, and expressive. The artist uses the simplest of means, pencil on paper, to evoke something much larger and more complex. Goldsworthy is known for his land art. His ephemeral sculptures are made directly in nature, often from materials he finds on site: leaves, stones, twigs. This drawing is a record of that practice. He has carefully rendered what looks like a series of stone domes, their structure built from many small components, each with its own subtle variation. The drawing is delicate, understated, almost architectural in its precision. What makes Goldsworthy interesting is precisely this translation between direct experience and the patient work of crafting. He is part of a generation that has collapsed any simple distinction between art and craft, and in doing so, found new ways of seeing the world.
