Editor: This is Terry Winters' "Album #5," a print with cell-like forms. The composition feels biomorphic, almost like something seen under a microscope. What can you tell me about it? Curator: Consider the period in which Winters came to prominence, the late 70s and 80s. There was a strong reaction against the perceived excesses of late modernism. What do these biological forms seem to push against, in your opinion? Editor: Maybe a rejection of purely abstract forms in favor of something more grounded in the natural world? Curator: Precisely. Winters is engaging with systems of knowledge and power. The scientific imagery, though seemingly objective, reveals how we categorize and understand the world around us, and what hierarchies emerge from these interpretations. Editor: That’s a really insightful way to view it. I wouldn't have considered the power dynamics inherent in scientific representation. Curator: It highlights how artistic expression reflects the political climate of its time.
