Justin Earl Grant made this "Untitled Temores" watercolor to a size of 60.96 x 91.44 cm. It feels like Justin is letting the water do its own thing, with pools of color bleeding and merging, an almost free-form process. Look closely, and you will notice how the paint isn't controlled, but rather encouraged to run and mix on the paper. The texture has a delicate, washy feel. The lines are scratchy and nervous, like thoughts scribbled in a notebook. And the colors! Pinks, greens, blues – they collide and blend, creating a sense of movement. In the bottom right, see how a few splatters of pink and red create their own little universe, like tiny explosions of feeling? This piece reminds me a bit of Cy Twombly, who also had this knack for making chaos look beautiful. Grant's painting, like Twombly's, embraces the accidental and the imperfect, reminding us that art is just as much about the process as it is about the final product.
