Jan van Hoepen captured this photograph of an armoured train at Mafeking. It provides a glimpse into the Second Boer War, a conflict defined by colonial ambitions and resistance. Here, the train becomes a symbol of British military might, an imposing force rolling across the South African landscape with the Union Jack fluttering defiantly. Yet, look closer, and you can imagine the complex, interwoven narratives of race, class, and identity at play. For the Boers, these armored trains represented the intrusion of empire upon their land, a challenge to their cultural identity. They remind us to consider the human cost of such conflicts, and the diverse experiences of those caught in its grip. This photograph invites us to reflect on how technology, like this train, becomes a tool of power, shaping the destinies of people and nations.
