This landscape, Himalayas, was painted by Nicholas Roerich using tempera on canvas. He used very simple, traditional art materials, yet the painting is anything but conventional. Roerich’s approach was all about layering. He applied thin coats of paint to achieve an otherworldly luminosity, as if the mountains themselves were emitting light. This technique enhances the sense of majesty and spiritual significance, a concept tied to Roerich's philosophical beliefs about the Himalayas as a sacred space. Roerich was deeply involved in the Arts and Crafts movement. His work reflected a rejection of industrialization, with its emphasis on the artist's hand and the expressive potential of materials. The repetitive, almost meditative act of layering paint becomes a form of labor, imbuing the artwork with a sense of time and devotion. Looking at the material and the process by which it was made, helps us understand that the Himalayas is not merely a representation of a place. It's a testament to Roerich's unique vision, one that bridges the earthly and the spiritual through the simple act of applying pigment to canvas.
