This design for a silk fabric was made anonymously, and in it, undulating lines interweave in black, white, gold and blue. The rhythmic use of line makes the piece, and its process, feel so intuitive. The lines feel like they're dancing, and that gives me such a sense of joy. The texture almost vibrates with this visual rhythm and makes me think about the relationship between mark making and physical gesture. It's all about how the hand moves, right? Look closely, and you can see that the lines aren't perfectly uniform. The artist allowed the materials to lead the way, and it feels very free. There’s a real tactile quality to the work. This piece reminds me of Sonia Delaunay’s fabric designs, where abstraction meets the everyday. Like a painter, she blurred the boundaries between the fine and applied arts. This piece is the same: a reminder that art is always speaking to other art, through time and across media.
