This textile print was made by Lucille Lacoursiere, sometime in the 20th century, though who knows exactly when? I imagine Lacoursiere carefully planning her design, maybe in the quiet of her studio, surrounded by spools of thread. It’s all lines, repeated in a grid pattern. The blue and brown hues create a calming yet intriguing rhythm. Look at the way she introduces those tiny lozenge shapes - so subtle, but they create the feeling of peering through a window. Lacoursiere had to make so many decisions, not just about color but texture and pattern too. It makes me think about Anni Albers and the Bauhaus weaving workshop where artists were so attuned to the expressive potential of textiles. Each thread has to be placed just so, to bring this vision into being. The artwork is more than the sum of its parts—it's a testament to the artist's vision and craft. We can never know an artist's intentions, but we can open ourselves to a world of possibility, of making and of meaning.
