This black and white photograph, taken in June 1908 by an anonymous photographer from Monumentenzorg, shows the reconstruction of Wijchen Castle, and it's all about process. The scaffolding wraps around the building like an embrace, hinting at the labor and care involved in rebuilding. The tones are soft, almost hazy, creating a dreamlike image. Look closely at the way the light filters through the wooden beams, creating a complex network of shadows. This reminds me of working on a painting, where each layer builds upon the last, creating depth and texture. Here, the building is both solid and ephemeral, caught between past and future. The photograph, like art, is a conversation across time. It makes me think of Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs of industrial structures - the same sense of documenting the everyday, finding beauty in the functional. It’s a snapshot of a moment in time, but also a reflection on the ongoing process of creation and re-creation.
